Wisente an der Müritz und auf Usedom
Jabel/Ptätenow. Der nächste Verwandte des Bisons ist der Wisent. Die Verwandtschaft ist so eng, dass beide Arten uneingeschränkt kreuzbar sind. Auf dem zur Gemeinde Jabel gehörenden Damerower Werder westlich von Waren (Müritz) entstand 1957 unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Dr. Dathe, Direktor des Berliner Tierparks und Sielmann des Ostens, ein Schaugatter. Erste Bewohner waren ein Stier und eine Kuh, die als Staatsgeschenk aus Polen kamen.
Genau vor 20 Jahren eröffnete in Prätenow auf der Insel Usedom ein zweites Wisent-Reservat. Auch hier kamen die ersten Tiere aus dem polnischen Urwald von Białowieża. Geöffnet ist von Besuchen kann man beide Einrichtungen von Ostern bis Oktober täglich ab 10 bis 17 Uhr, Jabel bis 20 Uhr, Prätenow bis 17 Uhr. Doch nicht nur die Könige der Wälder, die es bis Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts auch in Pommerns freier Wildbahn gab, machen das Gehege zum Touristenmagnet. Dafür sorgen auch ein Baumhaus für gewiefte Kletterer und ein Heidehaus, das die Fauna der Urlaubsinsel vorstellt.
